Dog Safety

This week we have been learning about dog safety. We decided this would be a good topic for hauora, as there are lots of dogs in our community and we need to know how to keep ourselves safe when around dogs.

We learnt that there are nine rules we need to follow; they are:

1. Check it's Sweet - Before you Meet!
2. To Understand - they Sniff your Hand!
3. Chin or Chest -  that's the Best!
4. To meet a Pup - ask a Grown Up!
5. If a Dog has a Snack - Keep well Back!
6. Keep your Face - Out of their Space!
7. Don't Run and Shout - it Freaks Us Out!
8. A Dog's not a Toy - Don't Tease and Annoy!
9. Quiet and Slow - is the way to Go!

On Friday, Mrs Foley had organised a special visitor. To our surprise three visitors turned up. We had two local Police Dog Handlers bring their dogs to meet us and another Police Officer with the pup he is caring for and training.

The officers talked to us about their job, the dogs role and how the dogs help them in their duties. We were able to see how well trained the dogs are through demonstrations. Last of all, the children were able to put their knowledge of the rules into use when the opportunity came to pat the dogs.

It was an incredible experience for everyone who was able to take part. We are lucky to have great Police Officers in our community who can come see us to assist our learning.

Assembly

This week it was Ruma Waru's turn to host assembly. Grace and Leila volunteered to be our leaders and with the help of our Rm6 helpers they did a fabulous job!

A small group of children shared why they love Play in the Classroom and what they learn from being able to play.

I was very proud to see how brave everyone was to get up on front of the school and to speak clearly about the topic. Ka pai, Ruma Waru!
